Vegan or vegetarian sources of protein are used for most plant-based meats so that consumers get the same protein benefits as animal meats. But these plant-based meats contain just similar amounts of total and saturated fats as compared to their meat counterparts. While some packaged plant-based meats may also contain ingredients that a number of people would want to avoid, such as dextrose, refined oils and added sugars.
Additionally, plant-based meats have to be fortified with Vitamin B12, a nutrient essential for energy production since they do not naturally contain Vitamin B12.
Finally, few plant-based types of meat are high in sodium content, which is typically the primary concern for those who think plant-based meats are unhealthy. However, a point to be noted is that most comparable animal meat products are also high in sodium.
