A low glycemic index is the main quality for which sweet potatoes are known and that helps to maintain good blood sugar levels. According to one study, sweet potatoes are believed to improve insulin sensitivity in people with type II diabetes.

Potassium helps reduce sodium in the blood and sweet potatoes are a rich source of it. This feature of sweet potatoes makes them especially popular among people with high blood pressure. A lower glycemic index and a high amount of potassium both help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.

It is believed that purple sweet potatoes lower inflammation and help reduce body weight by preventing the growth of fat cells, preventing obesity. While beta-carotene present in sweet potatoes converts to an active form of vitamin A, which is an essential element for the formation of light-detecting receptors inside the eye. It also protects eye cells from damage and lowers the risk of vision loss.
