Caffeine is considered to be a powerful stimulant that has an impact on the central nervous system. Drinking moderate amounts of caffeine is associated with feeling more awake, aware, and motivated. How strongly a person experiences such effects after consuming caffeine is referred to as caffeine sensitivity.

One can find that a single cup of coffee in the morning is too much, but another might require three or four cups to feel the benefits of caffeine.

Caffeine sensitivity cannot be measured, but scientists have broadly classified it into three groups based on how the body metabolizes caffeine.

  • Normal Sensitivity: The majority of people probably fall under the category of typical caffeine sensitivity. It means that they can drink up to 400 mg of caffeine (around four to five cups of coffee) without having any unwanted adverse effects.

  • Low Sensitivity (Hyposensitivity): People with hyposensitivity usually can consume higher doses of caffeine without any kind of side effect. These people are also able to drink caffeine before bed and don’t experience sleep interruptions. According to one study, approximately 10% of the population carries a gene linked to caffeine hyposensitivity.

  • High Sensitivity (Hypersensitivity): People with hypersensitivity can metabolize the stimulant more slowly. Even small doses of caffeine can lead to restlessness, insomnia, headache, and increased heart rate.
