Fructose sensitivity refers to an individual's difficulty in metabolizing fructose, a type of sugar found in many fruits and sweeteners. Some people may experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhoea when consuming foods or drinks that contain high levels of fructose. This can be due to a genetic condition called fructose malabsorption, or it may be a symptom of other underlying issues such as inflammatory bowel disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
People with fructose sensitivity may need to limit their intake of fructose to manage their symptoms.
Fruits, various vegetables, and honey all contain fructose, a natural sugar. Some people have poor fructose absorption and these people are often called fructose intolerant.
