Childhood or adolescence can mark the beginning of high cholesterol. Current recommendations advise starting screenings in childhood for this reason

  • Children and teens: Starting at the age of nine, get your cholesterol examined every five years. A youngster who has excessive cholesterol or parents with a history of heart issues may start much earlier.
  • People assigned male at birth (AMAB): Up until the age of 45, have your cholesterol examined every five years. Get checked every one to two years from the age of 45 to 65. After age 65, schedule a yearly checkup.
  • People assigned female at birth (AFAB): Until the age of 55, have a checkup every five years. Get checked every one to two years from the age of 55 to 65. After age 65, schedule a yearly checkup.
