Soak the bengal gram overnight or for a minimum of 8 hours.

In a pressure cooker or large pot, boil the soaked bengal gram with bay leaves, black cardamom, and 1 teaspoon of salt in 3 cups of water until the gram is cooked and tender.

Once cooked, strain the boiled gram and reserve the cooking water.

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

Add cumin seeds and allow them to splutter.
